June 30th – strike for pensions!

We have received confirmation today that all branches in Adult Education, Further Education, and post-92 Higher Education will be going on strike on Thursday 30th June alongside members of the schoolteachers’ unions ATL and NUT, in defence of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.  PCS (the civil service union) will also be taking industrial action on that day.

There is a briefing about the issues on our website at http://www.ucu.org.uk/media/pdf/8/1/ucu_tpsbriefing_jun11.pdf

If you wish to direct colleagues towards a tool to see how much they stand to lose under the proposed changes, please give them this link to our TPS Calculator: http://www.ucu.org.uk/index.cfm?articleid=5212

With that in mind, it is time to start preparing for the day of action two weeks from today.  Branches could be sorting out picketing rotas and liaising with local colleagues from ATL, NUT and/or PCS in the build-up, as well as attempting to contact members face-to-face to encourage them to come out on strike.  If you would like some help with this, please get in touch by email to JRooney@ucu.org.uk or by phoning the regional office.

There will also be several events during the day.  The biggest will be the cross-union rally starting at midday in Birmingham city centre, which will include a march through the city centre.  Several “feeder demonstrations” have been organised, for example in Wolverhampton (meet 10.45am outside Metro One before travelling en masse to Birmingham at 11.15am).  As and when we get more details of these, we will publicise them to you.  There will also be a rally in Worcester city centre, details of which will follow.

If you would like to hold a members’ meeting in your branch in the run-up to this day of action, and would like my support in doing so or in finding a speaker for it, please get in touch ASAP.

Colleagues in pre-92 Higher Education branches will not be out on strike on June 30th, but we would encourage you to send messages of support to local branches that will be on strike, and also to attend one of the rallies if at all possible.

If you have any further comments or questions, please get in touch as soon as possible!
