UCU Activity on May 5th

Following the meeting of Regional Committee this weekend and the calling of a Day of Action on May 5th by the national FE Committee, we are contacting all West Midlands branches (both FE and HE) to urge you to show your opposition to funding cuts, redundancies and further threats to the education sector by holding a branch meeting, open to all your members, on Wednesday May 5th.  You might use it just to let members know what you’ve been up to recently, and what wins the union has had.  Alternatively, you might use it to brief them on what management in your institution has got planned.  Either way, it’s a great forum to build support, and get assistance from lay members for organising, campaigning and recruiting; you might be able to get more members or reps out of it, or start an action group who will lead or assist with campaigning on important issues in your area.

If you’re feeling more ambitious, you might instead organise a Q&A meeting with Parliamentary candidates, as it’s the day before the General Election.  Alternatively, you could even arrange a lunchtime demonstration or media stunt, with leafleting and awareness-raising for the general public, to draw attention to the situation in your institution.  If you do, you could also try to take some pictures with a digital camera; we’re in the process of setting up a regional website, where we could publicise your successes.  A visual record of a packed members’ meeting or demonstration would be a great boost when times get tough – and we can post some of them here on the West Midlands blog for others to look at too!

If you’d like any advice and support with any of these things, please get in touch with Joe Rooney (Branch Development Organiser), either by email (JRooney@ucu.org.uk) or by calling the West Midlands Regional Office on 0121 634 7382.
